Boxing Gloves Buying Guide: Weight, Material, and Sizing Explained

Weight, material, and sizing decisions that matter more for a bulk order than they do for a single pair — written for gyms, brands, and retailers.

Technical Context

Established in 2015, our Sialkot unit operates on a Technical-First mandate. For brands targeting 2026 growth, understanding the following points is non-negotiable for export-grade success.

Buying for a gym or brand is a different decision than buying for yourself

A single boxer picks gloves based on their own hand and training style. A gym owner or brand placing a bulk order has to pick specs that work reasonably well across a wide range of users — which means the "right" choice isn't always the same one an individual fighter would make for themselves.

Weight: the single most consequence-heavy spec

Boxing gloves are sized by ounces (oz), and this refers to the padding weight, not the glove's overall size. Common ranges:

  • 8-10oz — competition and speed-focused training, minimal padding, favored by experienced fighters
  • 12-14oz — the most common general training weight, balances protection with mobility
  • 16oz — heavier sparring and bag work, more padding for extended sessions
  • 6-8oz (youth sizing) — scaled down for younger training programs

For a gym or general-purpose retail line, 12-14oz covers the widest use case and is usually the safest default weight to lead with in a bulk order, with 16oz as a secondary SKU for sparring-focused customers.

Material: PU leather vs. genuine leather, honestly

PU (polyurethane) leather is the more common choice for training-grade and private-label gloves. It's more consistent to manufacture at scale, more cost-effective, and performs well for general training use. The trade-off is a shorter lifespan under heavy daily use compared to genuine leather.

Genuine leather is more durable over time and develops a broken-in feel with use, which is why it's the standard for competition-grade gloves. It costs more per unit and has more manufacturing variability (leather is a natural material, so batch consistency takes more quality control).

For a first bulk order — especially private-label — PU leather is usually the more practical starting material: lower cost, more consistent across the batch, and perfectly adequate for training-grade use. Genuine leather makes more sense once you're building a premium or competition-focused product line specifically.

Sizing: it's about hand coverage, not just glove weight

Glove weight (oz) and glove fit are related but not identical — a 14oz glove still needs to accommodate a range of hand sizes. Most training glove lines offer S/M/L/XL sizing independent of the oz weight, so a bulk order typically needs to specify both dimensions: the oz weight per SKU, and the size run within that weight.

A common mistake in first bulk orders is treating "14oz" as a single SKU — in practice, you likely need 14oz in S/M/L/XL as four separate size variants within that one weight category, which affects your MOQ calculation per color/weight/size combination.

Customization considerations specific to gloves

Because gloves are a molded, curved product rather than a flat garment, not every printing/embroidery technique translates directly. Logo placement is typically limited to the wrist strap and the back of the hand panel, and embossed or debossed branding (pressed directly into the material) is a common alternative to printing for a more premium, durable finish that won't crack or peel with repeated flexing.

Putting a first order together

A reasonable starting bulk order for a gym or new glove line: one core weight (12-14oz), one material (PU leather for cost efficiency), a full size run (S-XL), and one or two core colorways before expanding further. This keeps your MOQ commitment manageable while still covering the range of customers you're likely to serve.
