GSM in Fabric Explained: How to Choose the Right Weight

GSM tells you more about how a garment will actually feel than the fabric name does. Here's how to read it and use it when placing your order.

What GSM actually measures
GSM stands for Grams per Square Meter — it's a direct measurement of how much a one-meter-by-one-meter piece of the fabric weighs. It's not a style rating or a quality score by itself; it's a density measurement. Higher GSM means more fiber packed into the same area, which generally (but not always) translates to a thicker, heavier, more structured fabric.
Why GSM matters more than the fabric name alone
Two garments can both be called "cotton fleece" and feel completely different depending on their GSM. A 260 GSM fleece hoodie will feel noticeably lighter and drape more loosely than a 400+ GSM heavyweight version, even though both are technically the same fiber blend. If you're specifying a product to a manufacturer, giving a GSM range is far more precise than saying "make it feel premium" — GSM is a number both sides can agree on and verify.
A practical GSM comparison by product type

Note the overlap between sweatshirt and hoodie ranges — a 350 GSM hoodie and a 350 GSM sweatshirt can weigh the same per square meter, but the hoodie will still feel bulkier overall because of the extra hardware and double-layer hood construction, not the fabric weight itself. GSM tells you about the fabric; it doesn't account for construction.
Choosing GSM for your specific use case
Climate matters more than most designers plan for. A 400+ GSM hoodie designed for a UK winter drop will feel oppressive if your actual customer base skews toward warmer regions. Match GSM to where the garment will realistically be worn, not just to how "substantial" you want it to feel in photos.
Higher GSM generally costs more. More fiber per square meter means more raw material per unit, so heavier fabric weights typically increase your per-unit cost and can slightly extend production lead time. Factor this into your pricing model before locking in a GSM spec you can't sustain at scale.
Test before committing to an extreme. If you're deciding between a 320 GSM and 420 GSM hoodie, the difference is significant enough that it's worth ordering a sample of both rather than guessing from a spec sheet — GSM numbers describe weight accurately, but "how it feels in the hand" is still a physical judgment call.
GSM isn't the only spec that matters
GSM tells you about weight and density, but it doesn't tell you about stretch, breathability structure (like mesh perforation), or fiber blend performance (like moisture-wicking polyester vs. natural cotton breathability). Use GSM as one input alongside fabric composition and construction type, not as the only spec on your tech pack.
